Ok no problems. Single vision and bi focals.
But get your PD right. It's not always on the prescription.

Murph what is 'the PD'? I ask as the last pair of glasses I had (from a local optician) were so bad that they had new lenses made as they said that I was using a lower area of the lens than expected. The new ones are not a lot better and I have reverted to the old ones as the prescription has only altered for reading not distance. I had similar problems the last time (different opticians) but they managed to sort it quite easily.
It is these experiences that make me wary of ordering on line. However if I had always had no problems then I would have given on line glasses a try.

We use Lensbase, for ordering contact lenses for PMS, and save a fortune. He can get the exact same lenses, made by Johnson and Johnson, for nearly half the price. We've not tried ordering glasses though, but would recommend it for lens users. x

Thanks all. I have had problems every time I have new glasses. The last time was specsavers - they made my glasses up to the wrong prescription. I took them back because one eye was way too week - they measured the lens and said there was a mistake. They tried to blame me! I had to take time off to go back to the shop in Blackpool and pay for parking too, but there was no sort of recompense or apology.
I think that online might be a darned site (sight!) easier.
The frames on glasses direct are really nice and much cheaper too.

Your optician is obliged to give you a prescription but doesn't have to state your PD on it. Specs made to the wrong PD will deffo give you headaches.
I bought some specs from Tesco and the nice optician there measured mine and told me what it was.
I was online that very evening getting a pair of titanium flexi frame Bi Focals for 65 squid.
My specs from both Tesco and the online chappies have been great
It's the ones from my local optician that have been the problem.
You can talk to your online optician. Check website for details

I went to Boots for my last pairs (ordinary glasses and sunglasses). I immediately felt discomfort in my right eye, and commented that it seemed to be straining to focus on things, while the left eye felt fine.
Turned out the right lens had been made up to the value stated by the optician, but it was too strong and was unbalancing my vision - I hadn't realised they could over-correct like that.
Funny thing is, I still think I can see fine using my old glasses which would be three years old now. Can't see a huge difference at all, even though the values on the prescription had altered slightly.
It isn't that I'm shortsighted so much as the degree of astigmatism, the right eye being noticeably worse than the left. I can't focus on the laptop screen from two feet away without my glasses, but I can 'see' it perfectly well, if you see what I mean. Everything is just a bit blurry round the edges without them.

Many thanks Murphy that is great. I tried Vison Express once and only once. The eye test was fast but more later. Then the salesperson went into overdrive with the total cost (even with the free pair) far exceeding that charged by independent opticians. The price was over £400-00 (this was 12 years ago BTW) by the time she stopped adding on costs for tint and anti scratch. Relief came when someone came up to say that the machine had broken down so they could not offer any more same day made up prescriptions. I walked with her almost hanging on to my ankles as I left the shop - she even offered to send them out by Taxi the following day (Sunday).
I then had my new glasses made up by a recommended optician and lo and behold the [VE] prescription was incorrect. Luckily they gave me a reduction against the new glasses ot the correct pr4escription.

The PMDG used Glasses Direct for varifocals and has been very pleased with them. Boots did the original prescription and the young lady tried to resist giving the PD. - The PMDG asked to see the manager who confirmed they had no right to withold it and handed it over immediately!

Just one question - how do these online opticians measure height of bifocal or varifocal? Many years ago I worked for an independent optician and he used to draw on the mock lenses to get the height right. I have also had problems with new glasses but cannot fault the service I had from Specsavers. I'm sure the optician used to hate seeing me in the reception area, but he kept replacing lenses for me until I was totally happy. Now I am contemplating new frames but dread the same problems. My prescription has changed a little, but I do know my PD.

Hi TT - that is my current problem - it appears that my viewing height (or whatever the correct term is) is lower than is considered normal hence my current problems with my glasses.

Hi Carl - my problem isn't really with the height but when I get new specs my left eye doesn't feel as if it's doing any work - almost as if I was holding my hand in front of it - weird! It's worse when I'm tired. Must be old age, as nothing shows up on eye test!

My right with me - but that is down to astigmatism. Had operations when younger to sort it all out but the Right eye does not like to work all that much - particularly in bright light.
