Hello artistic types
I don't know if any of you visit the gardening board, so you may not know that the latest venture in tog publications is to be a gardening book.
Now, since not all gardeners are good photographers (I'm classing myself in this group - I can grow things and tell you how good they look, but I probably can't show you!) and the budget for the book is allowing us a certain number of both colour and black and white photos, I thought I'd issue a plea to those of you who know which end of the camera to point in the right direction.
Does anyone have, or would anyone be prepared to take, some gardening related photos which they'd be happy for us to use in the book?
We could also use some black and white line drawings if anyone can wield a pencil to provide any of those.
Obviously it doesn't all have to be plant related, it can include assorted garden bugs, sheds, allotments, wrinkly old gardeners or whatever you fancy along the gardening theme.
If anyone would like to offer a contribution, can you please email your pictures to gardentogs@hotmail.co.uk by the end of August.
Thanks very much
Tina B

Are there any specific technical requirements - file spec (*.jpg or RAW etc.), minimum/max file size/resolution?

Are there any specific technical requirements - file spec (*.jpg or RAW etc.), minimum/max file size/resolution? Haven't a clue (mostly because I'm not sure I understand the question!) but I will go and find out and come back to you on that one

My technical guru advises that files should be .jpeg format, 300dpi and maximum of 5x4" (or whatever that is in new fangled metric stuff)
Thanks

Speaking with my professional DTP hat on, unless you really know what you're doing, don't tamper with images sizes - send in original jpgs straight off the camera and let the publisher worry about sizing. Providing your camera is shooting at 3 megapixels or more, the images will be reproducable, although the higher the mpx specification the greater the likelihood of a particular picture being reproduced at a large size (although this will depend on the intended size of the book and the design brief).
Try not to worry about the technical specifications too much, just concentrate on getting good, clear, interesting, well focused pictures.
Don't be tempted to use mobile phones - their pictures often look very good on computer monitors but are rarely of sufficient quality for press reproduction. Under no circumstances take pictures from websites unless they are specifically downloadable high resolution images. If not intended for press reproduction they will be physically small and heavily compressed and cannot be enlarged without severe image quality deterioration which will make the finished product look scruffy and amateurish.

Remember when sending messages to a hotmail email account that the total files size of all pictures and any message can not be bigger than 10 Mb So quality pictures may need to be sent one at a time.
