I've strated this as a new thread as it's not really part of the Equipment thread.
As some of you know I got the new camera on Wednesday and tried it at the TOGs Chorus bash. The pictures speak for themselves, and I'm really happy with how the camera performed, but...
It kept locking up, sometimes after 30 minutes or so, sometimes after 2 or 3 minutes. I had to take the battery out, then it would be fine again for a while. This happened with different lenses as well.
When I got it home and downloaded the photos the first picture was numbered 188! I know I'd shot a few frames the night before, but not over 180 of them. It's clear the camera, although all packaged as new, had been used previously and returned. It's fairly obvious it had been sent back as faulty, someone had checked it briefly, and been sent out again.
I phoned the suppliers, who immediately agreed to get a new one in and on its way to me, whilst I send the faulty body back. They also suggested (and I've no reason to doubt them) that they would not have sent out a returned item "as new", so the suspicion falls on Pentax - the way it was packaged supports this a bit.
I can't really blame anyone, and hopefully I'll get the replacement quickly, it's just an annoyance. I'm glad I was able to give the camera a thorough test so quickly though - if I'd left it a few weeks they might not have been so quick to replace it.

This practice does go on unfortunately, I purchased a 'new' Panasonic DVD recorder a few years ago that has a security feature where the owner can enter their name and address that cannot be erased. I found the name and address already filled in when I came to do this. Big embarrasment for the retailer and presumably Panasonic who supplied them

You would think it costs them more in admin costs and loss of reputation to try the faulty product on a second customer than to just scrap it. That's just plain daft.

I agree!
Had an apologetic email today to say the replacement will be despatched tomorrow. So far I can't fault the handling of the problem, which makes me even more suspicious that it was Pentax at fault.
