Think I need something other than a happy snappy camera. Can't get this one to expose as I want - here's the best of a large number of attempts at what was a spectacular dawn with mist and trees and stuff!

Ian not sure what camera you use now but the new Nikon D3000 + AF-S DX VR NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Zoom Len, is well worth the upgrade cost (best price just over £400)

I have adjusted a bit for you - I hope it appears as you would like.

I've had a couple of attempts at adjustments

I may be (probably AM) a total Philistine, but I have to say that of all the variations so far, I still prefer Flaggers' original.
I speak as someone who has seen more than her fair share of Scottish dawns.

Not a parasite at all Ivy - I tend to agree other than maybe a bit of cropping I prefer the atmospheric look of the original. However what has been done shows just how much information a modern camera captures that remains available if one wishes to do a little manipulation (and don't we all like a bit of that? - Oh yes we do).

There is almost certainly more detail in the original picture, but I worked from the version posted which had been heavily compressed. If the OP is looking for something more than a P&S but maybe not wanting to go the whole hog to DSLR, a number of manufacturers have introduced "bridge cameras" into their ranges - it might be worth looking at these?
I'd love to have been able to capture the original at several exposure levels as I think it'd make a great HDR project.

I agree it looks a good HDR project - keep the detail at the top but just brighten up the grass a bit.
My new Pentax has a setting that apparently should do that within the camera - all I've got to do is work out how to use it now! What has surprised me with the few pictures I've taken is just how little tweaking I'm doing (other than cropping and that's down to me not the camera).
My previous camera, a Minolta Dimage Z5, was what you might call a "bridge" camera, and has served me well for several years. I was thinking of putting it on Ebay until I discovered they sell for about £40 on there - at that price I might as well keep it!

So, I give the picture to a mate, ask him to see if he can 'tweek' it a bit..."It's on the Togs site" I says...

Glen I've only just started to play at HDR - some of the images I've seen created by others look stunning, but I would not want to look at them all day. I've been mainly using the autobracket function at -1 1 +1 to get the hang of tone mapping, but have yet to get the right opportunity, such as the pic in this thread - once I've got the mapping sorted I'll expand the number of exposures to +/-3 - got to be oh-so-careful not to move the camera whilst making the changes Does your new Pentax take several exposures for it's HDR mode, or does it map in the camera?

Yes!
Seriously it will take multiple bracketed exposures automatically (either 3 or 5), but you can also expand the dynamic range which, in theory, should achieve the results in camera. I'm not entirely convinced by the latter to be honest. Effectively it under-exposes the picture by one stop then brings the lowlights up electronically, primarily to avoid washed out sky.
Some time when I've got a suitable subject (and the tripod) I'll give it a go and report back!

In order to post the pics above, I had to put them on my flickr site. Well, the following comment has been received; "I was exploring on Flickr and I saw your photo... I thought that I must comment in, because it's great! It's like an scen from the Illusionist!! I hope that you comment my gallery! Good luck and be water my friend! " If the OP wishes to engage with the person that sent me this, drop me a PM and I'll give you their details. Other than that, I will be deleting the two images on the 14th as they are not my "work" and as such I can't take any credit for them. Alternatively, if the OP wishes to comment on flickr and claim the credit, I have no issue with this whatsoever.

That really is quite an incredible photo and I doubt with all the bells and whistles, you could have done much better. Nature has provided everything. Gorgeous Flaggers. You sly fellow you. x
