I've just been treated to one of these - the latest model has a little sort of dock that you screw into the base of the camera and leave there, then slide and lock the pod onto it. The dock has a spirit level on it, so you can make sure the camera is level when you're setting up a shot.
Now, I haven't had a chance to go out and play with it yet - just got it tonight and I put my back out on Monday, so no way was I running out in the snow and ice to play this evening. (I can just about hobble).
What I did do was take a comparison shot of a figurine I bought the Hippy for Christmas, of a hookah-smoking chap on a flying carpet. There's a hollow space inside it to burn an incense cone, so it looks as though yer man is smoking. I didn't light any incense tonight, as I just wanted to contrast the tripod-assisted shot with my handheld and rather wobbly attempt of a few days ago.
This is the wobbly shot:
This is tonight's attempt. Set up with the aperture setting taking priority, manually focused, ten second timer delay as I've no remote and that I thought would offset any wobbles when I pushed the trigger. No flash, as that tends to bleach it out (and also accounts for the shakiness of the previous shot which was handheld):
I'm really pleased with the difference between the two shots. This isn't meant to be an artistic or particularly great shot, just me waffling on about the difference I've noticed just with the use of the Gorillapod. It feels very light but pretty sturdy, and copes with the Fuji Finepix S9500 very nicely. And it is very, very adaptable. Really looking forward to getting out and experimenting with it some more! I'm also planning on setting up the figurine with a neutral-coloured background and see if I can't light it a little better, get the smoke set up and see if I can get a really good picture of it that does it justice.
