On general release from last Friday, Cert. 15 The story of the women machinists at the Ford plant in Dagenham that went on strike initially to be recognised as skilled workers, but as we see, the fight soon becomes about the difference in pay between men and women generally. The strike led to the Equal Pay Act and its effect was felt worldwide. Sally Hawkins plays Rita O'Grady, the initially reluctant leader of the group, whilst the part of Albert Passingham may as well have been written for Bob Hoskins, he played brilliantly, it as only he could. We follow the story of the strike and it's consequences both for the women, the other workers at the plant and the British Government. The most refreshing thing about the movie was the total absence of violence or sexual content. There is a fair bit of strong language but nothing that you wouldn't hear on TV post-watershed. There were a few anachronisms, but they do not detract from the story. Overall a very good film to go and see and I'd give it 8/10. One of the advantages of a film like this is that it's not attractive to those most likely to spoil your enjoyment
