What a tremendos blast from the past...
The review's as promised.. Although i know they are a little late..
Saturday night was most deffinatley party night. The Zombie's and The Yardbirds were quite frankley brilliant!
The Yardbirds came on first and did most of their back cattolog.. Although they obviously all have new band members they have both chosen well. I made a point of shutting my eye's and listening properly to them both. And have to say that they managed to pull off what must have been a very difficult gig.. The sound man did his best but the St Albans Areana is terrible for accustic's.
As it was a sell out there really wasn't much room to have a bop around, but my mates and I managed especially when The Zombies played the Harmonious 'Care of Cell 44'.. To say that it blew our minds 'Man' may be a slight understatement. 'Friends of mine' became rather haunting and the 'Buthers Tale' took hold of me by the throat and shook the living daylights out of me. I had become rather complaicent to just how good they were.. Overtone's of 'The summer of love' crept in and had a peek. Almost as if Brian Wilson had come from Hertfordshire and not California... Having never seen either band befor (The Zombie's or the Beachboy's) i was mightily impressed..
When the Yardbirds first came on the stage the tought crossed my mind of how wonderfull it would be if Jimmy page were to turn up... I saw him on the way out.. He's still got a lovely bum. And as he only live's up the road hoped that he would put in an apperance.. But alass he didn't get on the stage and do his thing.. Was relieved that 'Slow hand' didn't show his face.. The guilt would have been too much to bare. When they kicked into 'Over Under Sideways Down' after a little to much chat for my liking i was away with the fairies. And they did what friends that had seen them befor said that they would do, they went from one song straight into another. From memory the next was 'White Summer' Drinking Muddy Water was in there somewhere too.. Surfice to say i had the most amaizing time on saturday night.. Especially as when we finally got over to the pub we find both bands sat at the bar having a beer... Top night!
Now... Sunday morning came down rather heavey on my head.. As you can imagin. The night befor ended rather early... Somewhere around 6.30 i believe my head found the pillow. But i knew that i had a treat instore for me... A friend was putting on a music day at her new pub.. As we both have been in the music bizz in the past. We still have a few contacts.. James Hunter is one of mine.. (Formally "Hawling Wilf") He is a lovely guy from top to toe, with a wicked sence of homour. Very dry and dark.. With the most amaizing blue eye's... He sings a little like Sam cooke and Muddy waters all rolled into this ever so good looking guy form east london... He started in Colchester and never really looked back.. He has a voice like Hot Syrup and play's the guitar like he's fooling around with his first love.. Which in away i supose it is..
Even though the wather was playing nasty tricks on us and the wind was threatening to blow us all away, James made the sun come come out with rendishons of 'No smoke without fire' and 'Riot in my heart' Blew away any hangover that was left rattling around in what was left of my brain.. To be honest i cant remember all the titles that James did on sunday.. mainly because the Speckled Hen kicked in and was too busy having a good time dancing about eating drinking and chatting with guys that i hadn't seen in years...
So that was my weekend of music and mayhem... I doubt that i will be having another one like that for quite sometime...

Time to go and buy some replacement ELO CDs. Tesco were selling a twin pack of Discovery and Time for £2.99 recently. I didn't really need them, but I got them anyway.

I'm not sure that my brother ever quite got over having to give me his ticket for a gig on the 'Malpractice' tour, (he'd fallen ill). Saw Wilko play a nicely dive-y place a few years back, and he was still wonderful. And what about 9 below zero ? Crackin' band. Check out the, now ancient, 'Live at the Marquee' for proof.

All cause i moaned at her that someone (you) had said something about Bob not being able to sing.. www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qs7VzK6h6YThe guy with the dark glasses on in the back ground is Robbie Robertson of The Band. Remember Gilbert??? How could I ever forget! I think he was a lyrical genius! (Alone Again Naturally is one of my all-time fave songs) Thanks, Caddi, for a top link!
